Skin Allergies and How to Soothe Them

It’s that time of year again and for those that have allergies, navigating the world of skincare can be a delicate dance. The irritation can be unbearable and all we want is relief so we can enjoy the beautiful weather. With so many different skin care products out there, it can be hard to choose the best one for us. Which one gives instant relief? Which one doesn’t have harmful chemicals that can actually agitate my skin even more?


Why not just make your own natural remedies. By doing this, we will know what exactly is put onto our skin for the relief we need. Not only that, but the ingredients are also all natural which is an added benefit.

Causes of Irritation

There can be several triggers of skin irritations, but it is important to know what can trigger them. Some of us may suffer from skin conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis (eczema) while others can be sensitive to the seasons changing, bug bites of food allergies.

The Signs

There are so many different triggers when it comes to allergic reactions, but most of us can tell if we have one. There can be a lot of redness and irritation that can not only be annoying and unsightly, but also painful.

Team that up with a little or a lot of inflammation, and we now have another problem on our hands. Thankfully, there are natural ways to manage this and get the relief that we seek.

Soothing Ingredients

Chamomile

Whether you choose to use the essential oil or the flowers themselves, chamomile can be great at combating skin allergies. With its natural anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, it is known to help calm irritated skin. It can also calm irritated skin, reduce redness, and promote healing. 

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory and cooling properties. It helps reduce redness, itching, and inflammation, making it effective for soothing various skin irritations, including allergic reactions.


If you’re fortunate enough to have an aloe plant near by, break a piece of it off and rub the juice onto the affected area. Aloe Vera juice can also be bought in many retail stores, but be sure to check the ingredients to find pure quality products.

Cucumber

Cucumber has cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. It can reduce swelling, soothe irritation, and hydrate the skin. Cucumber slices or cucumber-infused water are commonly used for skin relief. Best of all, you can make it right in the comfort of your own home.

Calendula

Calendula has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It helps soothe inflamed skin, promotes wound healing, and can be beneficial for allergic reactions or skin irritations.

Oats

I’m not talking about the prepackaged oatmeal that contains tons of sugar and other ingredients that we eat for breakfast. The oats that I’m referring to are rolled oats or even colloidal oatmeal that are in pure form.


Oatmeal has anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties that are ideal for calming irritated skin. It forms a protective barrier on the skin, helps relieve itching, and is often used in baths or as a topical treatment for various skin conditions.

Coconut Oil

One of the many reasons some people use coconut oil on the skin is because of its anti-inflammatory properties. Not only does it hydrate the skin (and has a wonderful scent) it can soothe itching, and may provide relief for conditions like eczema or contact dermatitis.

Lavender Oil

This is one of my favorite essential oils for a multitude of reasons. Lavender oil has anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and calming properties. It can help reduce redness, itching, and promote relaxation. Diluted lavender oil can be applied topically for skin relief.

Green Tea

Green tea contains polyphenols with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It can help soothe irritated skin, reduce redness, and promote healing. Cold green tea compresses are a common remedy.

Honey

Although it may cause a sticky mess, don’t ask how I know this, honey has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It can help soothe and heal irritated skin, and it's often used in natural skincare for its moisturizing benefits.

Witch Hazel

I use this one quite frequently on bug bites. Witch hazel has astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. It can help soothe inflamed skin, reduce itching, and provide relief for conditions like insect bites or contact dermatitis.

Application Tips and Precautions

Even though these ingredients are natural, some of us still may have skin allergies to them. Because we don’t want to exacerbate our current skin irritation, please take precaution when using and mixing these ingredients.

Essential Oils

All essential oils should be diluted with a carrier oil before being applied directly to the skin. Essential oils are highly concentrated and if applied directly to the skin may cause serious injury and even burns.

Patch Test

Before widespread use, perform a patch test to ensure you don’t have an adverse reaction to any of the natural ingredients.

Choose High Quality Ingredients

When choosing natural ingredients, quality matters. Be sure to read the ingredients of the items purchased to ensure they don’t have any unnecessary additives in the mix. That would kind of defeat the purpose of being natural recipes don’t you think. Also, be sure to follow the instructions on the manufacture’s’ labels.

Consult With Your Physician

Before incorporating any new or natural products in your routine, consult with your physician first. If you have and chronic conditions or take certain medications, some ingredients may interfere with that, so be sure it is safe to use.

With so many different products in the world, it can be quite difficult to find the right one for you. If you are like me and choose to not have unpronounceable chemicals, be applied to your skin, then going the natural route may be an option for you.
